Ben Talks Santa Monica: Resilience on a Warming Planet

Wednesday, March 20 2024 - 6:30pm
Annenberg Community Beach House
415 Palisades Beach Road Santa Monica, CA 90402

As temperatures rise, so does our sense of the fragility of our planet. How do the materials that make up Earth make us susceptible to climate-driven hazards? Can plants become more resilient to a changing climate? How can communities in vulnerable areas adapt in the face of rising waters? Join us for a lively evening at the Annenberg Community Beach House to explore these and other questions about resilience in the age of climate change.

Penn Arts & Sciences invites you to our 2024 Ben Talks program, featuring Douglas Jerolmack, an experimental geophysicist who seeks to understand how landscapes form and evolve; Doris Wagner, a plant biologist who is exploring ways of programming resilience to climate change into plants; and Simon Richter, an environmental humanist who focuses on cultural aspects of the climate emergency.

A dinner reception and warm conversation with fellow alums open the evening, followed by our faculty panel and dessert post-reception.

Featured Panelists

Doug Jerolmack, Professor of Earth and Environmental Science and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics
Simon Richter, Professor of Francophone, Italian, and Germanic Studies and Perry World House Faculty Fellow
Doris Wagner, DiMaura Professor of Biology

Moderated by

Mark Trodden, Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences and Fay R. and Eugene L. Langberg Professor of Physics
