GSWS/FQT/PWC 50th Anniversary Symposium
Join us in celebrating the past and present achievements of the GSWS/FQT community during a multi-day symposium, taking place on Penn's campus on Thursday, February 29th through Saturday, March 2nd.
Contact gsws-fqt@sas.upenn.edu with questions.
In 1973, students, faculty, and staff conducted a multi-day sit-in in College Hall to protest the violation of women’s rights on campus. The demands of the protestors eventually resulted in the formation of the GSWS Program (then called Women’s Studies) and the Penn Women’s Center. During the 2023–2024 academic year, GSWS/FQT, together with the Penn Women's Center and partners from around the university, will celebrate 50 years of transformative scholarship and advocacy on Penn’s campus.
This milestone provides us with the opportunity to take stock of the shifts in the field, globally and in the Penn context. In the last few years, the changes at GSWS/FQT have been significant—and worthy of celebration! We have changed the name of our Center to better reflect our scholarly focus on queer and transgender studies. We are in the middle of a multi-year cluster hire. Our core and affiliated faculty membership continues to expand in and beyond the School of Arts and Sciences, and our faculty, staff, and students continue to win prestigious awards for their work.
This event is presented by the Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, The Center for Research in Feminist, Queer, and Transgender Studies, and Penn Women's Center.
