Aronowitz Elected Member of Institute of Medicine

Robert Aronowitz, University of Pennsylvania Professor of History and Sociology of Science, has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the field of healthcare in the United States. He also holds an appointment in the Perelman School of Medicine, in the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine.

A physician and historian, Arnowitz’s research revolves around the role that risk and efficacy have played in driving trends and outcomes in health care. He has examined a range of issues, including the treatment and diagnosis of breast cancer in the present day through the lens of the past two centuries, as well as the politics of the HPV vaccine, the ways in which diseases become legitimized, and the social construction of Lyme disease. 

His new book, Risky Medicine: How Identifying and Treating Risk Is Transforming Our Health and Health Care, will be out in the spring.
