Mary Frances Berry Elected Honorary Fellow of American Society for Legal History

The American Society for Legal History has elected Mary Frances Berry an Honorary Fellow of the Society, the highest honor the society can offer. Berry is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania.

“No one has done more than Mary Frances Berry to advance our understanding of race, gender, and the Constitution in the United States, as evidenced by her work and by the work of the many scholars she has influenced,” said Michael Grossberg, president of the society.

Beyond her many published books and articles, Berry had a distinguished career in public service. She was appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by President Jimmy Carter, and was appointed chair of the commission by President Bill Clinton, serving a total of 25 years. Berry will be recognized on November 8 during the annual meeting of the ASLH.
