Michael Horowitz Honored with Best Book Award by ISSS

The International Security Studies Section (ISSS) of the International Studies Association (ISA) has selected Michael C. Horowitz, Associate Professor of Political Science, as the recipient of the section’s Best Book Award for 2010 for his book The Diffusion of Military Power: Causes and Consequences for International Politics. Horowitz will receive the award at the ISSS reception at the 2012 annual ISA meeting in San Diego.

Horowitz has been a member of the Department of Political Science since 2007. His main research interests include international conflict and security issues, the intersection of religious and international relations, the role of leaders in international politics and international security issues in East Asia. Before coming to Penn, Horowitz was the Sidney R. Knafel Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, a predoctoral fellow at the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard. His work has been published in several academic journals, including International Organization, the Journal of Politics, The Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Security, and Orbis.

The ISA was founded in 1959 to promote research and education in international affairs. The ISSS, a division of the ISA, aims to enhance knowledge and understanding about a variety of international security issues including war and peace, military effectiveness, civil-military relations, alliances and security institutions, terrorism, intervention, peacekeeping and the political economy of violence. The ISSS Annual Best Book Award is presented to the author whose work focuses on security studies and demonstrates originality, significance and rigor.
