Barbara Savage Featured in Two Oxford University Lectures

Barbara Savage, a historian and the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Head of the Department of Africana Studies, was recently featured twice as a guest lecturer at Oxford University. Her lectures, "Professor Merze Tate: Diplomatic Historian, Cosmopolitan Woman" and "Creating a New Field: Black Women's Intellectual History," were followed by short responses from scholars from a variety of perspectives.

Savage is the author and editor of multiple books, including Toward an Intellectual History of Black Women, a collection of essays by scholars of history and literature that establishes black women's places in intellectual history; and Your Spirits Walk Beside Us, an examination of the role and relevance of religion in the social and political lives of African Americans.

The lectures were sponsored by by the faculty of history at Oxford University; the Centre for Gender, Identity and Subjectivity; the Women in the Humanities; and Race and Resistance programmes at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH).
