Federal Funding Renewed for National Resource Centers in Area Studies
Funding for all four of the area-studies National Resource Centers in the School of Arts and Sciences has been renewed this year. The School's centers receiving federal support under Title VI of the National Defense Education Act are the Africa Studies Center, the Center for East Asian Studies, the Middle East Center and the South Asia Center. The U.S. Department of Education administers the National Resource Centers Program, which provides grants for higher education institutions to establish, strengthen and operate language and area- or international-studies centers. The grants support language instruction as well as interdisciplinary teaching and research aimed at understanding the peoples and cultures where those languages are spoken.
