Four Doctoral Candidates Named 2020 Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellows

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) named four Penn Arts & Sciences doctoral candidates 2020 Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellows. Sixty-five awardees were chosen from over 1,000 applicants. Fellowships support a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing.

Fellowships were awarded to:

Isabella Reinhardt, Department of Classical Studies, for her dissertation, Language and Reality in Early Greek Thought.

Maria Ryan, Department of Music, for her dissertation, Hearing Power, Sounding Freedom: Black Practices of Listening, Music-Making, and Ear-Training in the British Colonial Caribbean, 1807-1838.

Rovel Jerome Alex Sequeira, Department of English, for his dissertation, The Nation and its Deviants: Sexuality, Science, and Fiction in Colonial India, 1880-1950.

Miriam Ashkin Stanton, Department of History of Art, for her dissertation, Gravitational Imagination: Picturing Suspension from Eadweard Muybridge to the Space Age.
