Freeman Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Samuel Freeman, Avalon Professor of the Humanities and professor of philosophy and law, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Freeman works in social and political philosophy, ethics, and philosophy of law. His books include Justice and the Social Contract and Rawls, which examines the political philosophy of John Rawls. He edited the Cambridge Companion to Rawls, as well as John Rawls's Lectures on the History of Political Philosophy and his Collected Papers. Freeman came to Penn in 1985, the year he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Freeman and other new members will be inducted at a ceremony on October 7 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the Academy is based. Since its founding in 1780, the Academy convenes leaders from the academic, business, and government sectors to address critical challenges facing our global society.

“It is an honor to welcome this new class of exceptional women and men as part of our distinguished membership,” said Don Randel, chair of the Academy’s Board of Directors. “Their talents and expertise will enrich the life of the Academy and strengthen our capacity to spread knowledge and understanding in service to the nation.”
