Irma Elo Elected President of Population Association of America

Irma Elo, Tamsen and Michael Brown Presidential Professor in the Department of Sociology and member of the Graduate Demography Group, has been elected president of the Population Association of America, an interdisciplinary association that supports and promotes high-quality population research. The term begins on Jan. 1, 2024.
Elo’s research centers on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in health, cognition, and mortality across the life course and demographic estimation of mortality. In recent years, she has extended this focus to include health and mortality among racial/ethnic immigrant subgroups. She is currently the principal investigator of a study funded by the National Institute on Aging about mortality in the U.S. between 1990 and 2015.
