Jeffrey Kallberg Appointed Associate Dean for Arts and Letters

Jeffrey Kallberg, Professor and Chair of Music, has been appointed Associate Dean for Arts and Letters, effective July 1, 2010. In this role, he will oversee the School's academic programs in the humanities, including 13 departments: Classical Studies, East Asian Languages and Civilizations, English, German, History, History of Art, Music, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages, and South Asia Studies.

Dr. Kallberg is a leading historian of 19th- and 20th-century music and is considered one of the preeminent authorities on Chopin. He is the author of Chopin at the Boundaries: Sex, History, and Musical Genre, and he received international attention for his reconstruction of Chopin's first sketch for a Prelude in E-flat minor for the eventual set of Preludes, op. 28. Additionally, his critical edition of the Verdi opera Luisa Miller has been performed throughout Europe and the United States.

Dr. Kallberg has served as Vice President of the American Musicological Society, won three major awards for his publications, and earned NEH and Guggenheim Fellowships. A member of the Penn faculty since 1982, he has served as Chair of Music since 2003 and has also been a member of the School's Personnel Committee and Planning and Priorities Committee.

Dr. Kallberg will succeed Ann Matter, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Religious Studies. Dr. Matter served in the position of Associate Dean for four years, and she will return to full-time research and teaching.
