Junior Hakiem Ellison Receives Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award

Hakiem Ellison, C’22

Hakiem Ellison, C’22, a political science major minoring in urban education, has received a 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Involvement Recognition Award for his community service in West Philadelphia, where he grew up. Ellison began working with the Henry C. Lea Elementary School through an academically-based community service (ABCS) course called Music in Urban Spaces, coordinating drama and band classes and after-school music programs. He has also worked with Penn’s Summer Mentorship Program and co-produced a 100-page “College Knowledge” handbook featuring resources for navigating the college application process. Ellison has served in various peer mentor programs that provide support programs and services to first-generation and/or low-income students.

The 2021 Community Involvement Recognition Awards honor members of the Penn community whose active service to others best exemplifies the ideals Dr. King espoused. The winners were recognized during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Commemoration event on January 26, which can be viewed here
