Kane Shares in Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award

Charles Kane, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Physics

Charles Kane, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Physics, is one of three professors from universities in the U.K., U.S., and China to share this year’s Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award. Kane was honored for pioneering contributions that generated the field of topological insulators—materials with a special kind of electrical conduction on their surface—and initiated a new field in condensed matter physics.

The Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award was founded by Fudan University and Zhongzhi Enterprise Group in 2015 to recognize scientists who make fundamental achievements in the fields of mathematics, physics, and biomedicine. The other recipients were Michael Berry of the University of Bristol and Xue Qikun of Tsinghua University.

The winners will receive certificates and trophies and share 3 million yuan ($444,661). In the past four years, winners of the prize have twice gone on to win a Nobel prize.
