John MacDonald, professor of criminology and sociology and Penny and Robert A. Fox Faculty Director of the Fels Institute of Government, has been elected a fellow of the Academy of Experimental Criminology (AEC) for his success in leading randomized, controlled field experiments in criminology.

MacDonald’s research focuses primarily on the study of crime and violence, race and ethnic disparities in criminal justice, and the effect of public policy responses on crime. He has served as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on health, injury prevention, and crime research projects with funding provided by the American Statistical Association, the National Institute of Justice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. His recent work appears in the American Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Public Health, Economic Journal, Criminology, and Journal of Legal Studies.

MacDonald earned a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and has been at Penn since 2006.

The AEC elects fellows annually. MacDonald will be recognized as an AEC Fellow during an award ceremony on Wednesday, November 16, at this year's American Society of Criminology meeting in New Orleans.
