Martin Claassen Named 2024 Sloan Research Fellow

Martin Claassen

Martin Claassen, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been named a 2024 Sloan Research Fellow by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The honor, open to early-career researchers in the fields of chemistry, computer science, earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics, provides winners with a two-year, $75,000 fellowship.
 
Claassen and Jiaoyang Huang, an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Wharton School, were among 126 researchers selected for the fellowship out of more than 1,000 nominees. The award is one of the most competitive in North America.  
 
Claassen, who joined Penn’s faculty in 2020, focuses on the theory of non-equilibrium dynamics and correlated phases in quantum materials. His research aims to understand how materials properties, light, and electronic interactions or topology can conspire to realize new states of matter far from equilibrium, and tackles these questions using theoretical techniques and numerical simulations.
