Paul Sniegowski Named President of Earlham College

Paul Sniegowski

Paul Sniegowski, the Stephen A. Levin Family Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Biology, will be leaving Penn this summer to assume the presidency of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, as of August 1.

Sniegowski has headed the undergraduate programs of the College since 2017. His achievements in that role, and his commitment to educational excellence throughout his 27 years at Penn, make clear why Earlham has sought out his leadership. As College Dean, Sniegowski has ensured that the undergraduate curriculum is always evolving, adding new minors and this year initiating a review of our longstanding General Requirement.

He has promoted inclusion in the undergraduate learning experience through a number of means: He has led several inclusive teaching initiatives in the College, has been a strong partner in Penn’s programs for First-Generation, Low-Income (FGLI) students, and established a College advisory board for FGLI students.

Sniegowski’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic deserve special praise. Moving the entire College so quickly to online instruction was a daunting undertaking, but he was tireless in engaging faculty, students, and staff to ensure the continued quality of a Penn Arts & Sciences education during that difficult time.

“Being named to a college presidency is a tremendous honor, and Paul’s appointment at Earlham is a well-deserved tribute to his devotion to student learning and to liberal arts education,” says Steven Fluharty, Dean and Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Professor of Psychology, Pharmacology, and Neuroscience. “He will be greatly missed at Penn, but I ask you to join me in wishing him well in his new role.”

Fluharty will begin the search for Sniegowski’s successor immediately. Earlham’s announcement of his appointment can be found here.
