Penn Arts & Sciences Projects Receive 2023 Sachs Program for Arts Innovation Grants

Nearly three dozen projects and people from Penn Arts & Sciences have received funding via the latest round of Sachs Program for Arts Innovation grants announced this spring.
 
Now in its sixth year, the program gave out $265,000 to 45 projects across the arts and humanities, including 15 in five categories: Artist Residency Grants, Community Partnership Grants, Project Grants, Curricular Grants, and Independent Creative Production Grants. The other 30 represented Student Grant Awards and First-Year Seminar Grants, given out in collaboration with the College of Arts & Sciences.
 
Penn Arts & Sciences grantees included, among many others, a hybrid performance piece featuring the Daedalus Quartet performing the music of Bela Bartok; a documentary about a man wrongfully convicted to life without parole; and The Trans Oral History Project, which preserves and makes accessible the stories of trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming artists, musicians, performers, and other creatives based in Philadelphia.
 
Some of the First-Year Seminar Grants include Portraiture, taught by Associate Professor Ivan Drpic in the Department of History of Art; Black Jazz Experimentalisms in the United States, taught by Assistant Professor Jasmine Henry in the Department of Music; Of Horses, Bows, and Fermented Milk: The Turkish Empire in 15 Objects, taught by Assistant Professor Oscar Aguirre Mandujano  in the Departments of History and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations; and Studying Sex, taught by Assistant Professor Beans Velocci in the Department of History and Sociology of Science.
