Penn Researcher Identifies New Species of Dinosaur
Steven Jasinski, a doctoral student in Penn Arts and Sciences' Department of Earth and Environmental Science, recently identified a new species of dinosaur closely related to the Velociraptor. The species, S. sullivani, was likely possessed of a keen sense of smell which would have made it a formidable predator. The small dinosaur also furthers scientists’ understanding of time period in which it lived, since it represents the only known dromaeosaur (commonly called raptors) from this period in North America south of Montana. Jasinski reported his findings in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Bulletin.
