Samuel Preston Wins Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg Award
Frederick J. Warren Professor of Demography Samuel H. Preston has been named winner of the 2009 Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg Award for excellence in writing and editing in the population sciences. The award is given every two years by the Population Council—an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations through biomedical, public health, and social science research on population issues. In commemoration of Dr. Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg, who played a leading role in information dissemination on international population issues, Preston will be presented the award at a Population Council reception in New York this fall.
Serving as SAS dean from 1998 through 2004, Preston has been a member of the sociology department since 1979. His research focuses on the causes and consequences of population change, with special emphasis on mortality. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine, as well as the American Philosophical Society. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association, and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. Preston has authored, co-authored and edited numerous books and articles, including Demography: Measuring and Modeling Population Processes, Population Growth and Economic Development: Policy Questions, Demography of Aging and The Epidemiologic Transition: Policy and Planning Implications for Developing Countries.
