SAS Students Awarded State Department Critical Language Scholarships

Nine students affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences have won U.S. State Department 2013 Critical Language Scholarships to study languages during the summer:

• Elliott Brooks, C'14, will study Arabic in Morocco. He is majoring in History of Art.

• William Figueroa will study Persian in Tajikistan. He is pursuing a Master's degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations.

• Susannah Fishman will study Azerbaijani in Azerbaijan. She is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology.

• Marc Kelley will study Urdu in India. He is pursuing a Master's degree in South Asia Regional Studies.

• Monika Bhagat-Kennedy will study Urdu in India.  She is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English.

• Ariel Koren, C'15, will study Chinese in China. He is majoring in East Asian Languages and Civilizations.

• Jason Parad will study Korean in South Korea. He is pursuing a Master of Public Health degree.

• Angela Perfetti, C'16, will study Arabic in Jordan.

• Mimi Sheng, W'13, C'13, will study Urdu in India. She graduated with a double major in finance and urban studies in May.

They are among approximately 600 U.S. undergraduate and graduate student scholarship recipients. CLS participants will spend seven to ten weeks in intensive language institutes this summer in one of 13 countries.
