Shelley L. Berger Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Shelley L. Berger, Daniel S. Och University Professor and Professor of Biology, who holds dual appointments in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Perelman School of Medicine, is one of three Penn professors elected to the 2013 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Berger is one of the world’s most distinguished epigeneticists.  Her research focuses on the role of chromatin—the combination of DNA and proteins found in chromosomes—in regulating genes, especially in cancer and viral infections.  She is the director of the Penn Epigenetics Program.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies, and a leading center for independent policy research. The current membership includes some of the world's most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities and the arts.
