Yang Receives Award for Outstanding Article

Guobin Yang, Professor of Sociology and Communication

Guobin Yang, Professor of Sociology in Penn Arts & Sciences and Grace Lee Boggs Professor of Communication in the Annenberg School of Communication, received an Outstanding Article award from the 2019 Annual Convention of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication for his paper “Remembering Disappeared Websites: Internet Memory, Media Biography, and Website History.”

Yang’s book The Power of the Internet in China: Citizen Activism Online received the Best Book Award of the ASA Communication and Information Technologies Section. His other books include The Red Guard Generation and Political Activism in China and China’s Contested Internet. He coedited Media Activism in the Digital Age with Victor Pickard, Associate Professor at the Annenberg School, and The Internet, Social Media, and a Changing China with Jacues deLisle, Stephen A. Cozen Professor of Law at Penn Law and Professor of Political Science, and Avery Goldstein, David M. Knott Professor in Global Politics and International Relations.

Yang is also the Deputy Director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China, a faculty member in the graduate groups in history, East Asian languages and cultures, and international studies (Lauder Institute), a faculty member in the Center for East Asian Studies, and affiliated faculty in the Asian American Studies Program. He is Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the Annenberg School and Director of the Center on Digital Culture and Society.
